New phase of Carterton Leisure Centre given the official seal of approval

A fantastic new range of facilities are now available to people using Carterton Leisure Centre.

Special guests joined councillors, leisure centre staff and managers to celebrate the official opening of the new phase of Carterton Leisure Centre.

The official ribbon cutting ceremony marked the culmination of years of effort to make the £8.4m project become a reality.

One of the invited guests was champion judo competitor Jim Birnie who has lived in Carterton for 27 years who regularly uses the gym for training.

Mr Birnie said: “The new part of the gym is fantastic with lots of equipment and plenty of room. The fact that I am training here at the age of 65 will hopefully encourage other people to come along.

“The great thing is there is something for everyone whether you want to be competitive or enjoy the facilities as a social event.”

The new Phase 2 building is connected to the existing leisure centre and features a trampoline park and soft play area which is already proving popular with residents.

Other facilities include a four-court sports hall, dance and spin studios, extended gym and refurbished changing rooms and social area. There are also five party rooms and two new cafés.

Cllr Michele Mead, Mayor of Carterton and Cabinet Member for Leisure at West Oxfordshire District Council, said: “This new building is an amazing benefit for Carterton as it appeals to the whole community and I pay tribute to the hard work of everyone who has played such a huge part in making it become a reality.”

Peter Bundey, Deputy Chief Executive of GLL Better which operates the District Council’s leisure facilities, said: “This is a phenomenal statement about the council investing in the local community. It is a centre for all the family to enjoy and will definitely help more people get more active more often.”
