New operator appointed to manage Witney and Chipping Norton Charter Markets

West Oxfordshire District Council is pleased to announce the appointment of Cotswold Markets Ltd as the new operator for the Charter Markets in Witney and Chipping Norton. The new contract is set to begin on 1 August 2025.

The appointment marks an exciting new chapter for the markets and reflects the Council’s broader commitment to keeping town centres vibrant, sustainable, attractive and well-managed. By bringing in a specialist market operator, the Council seeks to support existing stallholders, attract new traders, and increase footfall, all while enhancing the overall customer experience. Local residents, shops, and businesses are encouraged to consider taking a stall, helping to shape a lively, diverse marketplace that celebrates the community’s creativity and character.

Councillor Duncan Enright, Deputy Leader of the Council and Executive Member for Economic Development, said

“Our town centre markets are a much-loved tradition and a vital part of local life. By bringing in an experienced operator like Cotswold Markets Ltd, we’re investing in their future. This is about creating welcoming spaces that are well-run and continue to support local businesses and residents. I look forward to seeing the markets evolve and thrive in the months ahead.”

The Council would also like to extend a sincere thank you to Pat Bliss, who has managed the markets with unwavering dedication and care over the years. Our thanks also goes to all the current stallholders, whose commitment and hard work continues to bring life, character and a true sense of community to our high streets.

Cotswold Markets Ltd already works in partnership with the Council to deliver the highly successful Christmas Market in Marriotts, as well as a range of seasonal and specialist markets throughout the year. Their proven track record in running vibrant, community-focused events makes them well-placed to take on the Charter Markets in Witney and Chipping Norton.

Dave Joynes of Cotswold Markets Ltd commented:

“Cotswold Markets Limited are delighted to be working in partnership with West Oxfordshire District Council to operate the vibrant markets in Witney and Chipping Norton.

“As a family-run business with a long-standing commitment to supporting local communities, traders, and high streets, we are excited to bring our experience and passion to these two historic towns. Markets play a vital role in local life – offering fresh produce, unique goods, and a welcoming space for people to come together – and we look forward to enhancing this tradition in both Witney and Chipping Norton.

“We are committed to working closely with the Council, local residents, and traders to ensure these markets continue to thrive and evolve, supporting both the local economy and a strong sense of community.”
