New leisure strategy will focus on future of Windrush Leisure Centre

A new strategy which will include plans for the potential redevelopment of the Windrush Leisure Centre is set to be discussed by councillors.

The Leisure Built Facilities Strategy is set to build on the success of an action plan put in place nine years ago which has seen a series of developments including the recently opened Phase Two of the Carterton Leisure Centre.

The last phase of the original plan was to investigate options and make recommendations for the future of the Windrush Leisure Centre. Feasibility work is now underway with results of consultants’ studies expected in the autumn.

Part of the new strategy will drive public consultation on the future of the site to define residents’ future needs for leisure provision.

A meeting of the Council’s Cabinet on Wednesday 12 February will seek approval to launch the strategy and appoint consultants who will prepare it.

Cllr Michele Mead, Cabinet Member for Health and Leisure, (pictured) said: “The existing action plan has been extremely successful as many of our leisure facilities have been significantly improved with the recent opening of Phase Two at Carterton Leisure Centre a prime example.

“Our population is expanding and we need to cater for the leisure provision of all residents so this strategy will be hugely influential in how we plan for the future.”
