New crowdfunding programme set to champion community ideas across West Oxfordshire

West Oxfordshire District Council has approved plans for a new community crowdfunding programme to help local groups and residents bring community ideas to life and make a positive difference across West Oxfordshire.

The council is partnering with Crowdfunder UK to launch the new platform later this year, helping grassroots and community-led initiatives access support, build momentum and unlock additional funding.

The Council’s Executive approved proposals for the new programme at its meeting on 10 June.

Projects hosted on the platform will be able to apply for council pledges while also raising support from local residents, businesses, and other funders through crowdfunding. Applications will be assessed against priorities including community benefit, local need, and value for money.

The programme builds on the success of Westhive, the council’s existing community crowdfunding platform. So far, the platform has supported 54 projects, attracted 1,886 backers, and secured more than £1.19 million in pledges for community initiatives across West Oxfordshire.

The most successful projects have been those that align with the Council’s priorities to protect and enhance the natural environment, address the climate crisis, and build stronger, more resilient communities, delivering lasting benefits for residents across West Oxfordshire.

The new programme is expected to begin later this year.

Councillor Sandra Coleman, Executive Member for Stronger, Healthy Communities, said: “Crowdfunding has shown what local communities can achieve when they are given the support to turn ideas into reality. From projects supporting young people and families to initiatives improving biodiversity and wellbeing, we have seen real benefits for residents across West Oxfordshire.

“We’ve listened to feedback from communities and organisations and wanted to make the process more accessible and affordable. By moving to Crowdfunder UK there will be no project hosting costs, making it easier for community groups to launch projects, raise support and bring ideas to life.

“This new programme will continue to give communities the chance to shape their local area and access funding for ideas that matter most to them. We want to support initiatives that make a positive difference and help communities thrive.”
