More affordable housing developed for West Oxfordshire

West Oxfordshire District Council helped to deliver 267 affordable homes in West Oxfordshire in 2023, including 164 affordable rental properties, 99 shared ownership properties and four First Homes.

Cllr Geoff Saul, Executive Member for Housing and Social Welfare, said:

“The provision of genuinely affordable homes has never been more crucial. We are in the grips of a housing affordability crisis, with house prices in West Oxfordshire a staggering 11.4 times the average salary.

“Working with partners to deliver more affordable housing across the district is a number one priority for us, and we have set ourselves ambitious target to increase the number of affordable homes up to 2031.”

The development of 22 affordable homes at Giernalls Road, Hailey has recently been completed by housing association SNG (Sovereign Network Group). All 22 homes are built to emit much lower carbon emissions than an average home.

The Council worked with SNG to convert the site from a market-led site to an all-affordable housing site, and to secure grant funding from Homes England.

Joe Marshall, Regional Managing Director at SNG said: “We know that demand for affordable homes remains very high in Oxfordshire so the opportunity to work with West Oxfordshire District Council to help meet this need was welcome. SNG is committed to the area and its communities for the long term and we look forward to providing more affordable homes to meet local demand well into the future.”

This site is one of a number being developed across the district. Other affordable housing schemes are being delivered at Carterton by Platform, Enstone by Orbit and Aston by Stonewater. There are also market housing developer-led schemes that are delivering affordable housing in the district.
