Carbon Action Fund

Council launches Climate Action Fund to support local businesses in becoming more sustainable and resilient

West Oxfordshire District Council has launched its new Climate Action Fund grant scheme, designed to help small and medium-sized businesses in the district reduce their carbon footprint and become more climate resilient. Supported by the UK Shared Prosperity Fund (UKSPF) and the Rural England Prosperity Fund (REPF), the scheme offers financial backing for capital projects that promote sustainability.

Councillor Andrew Prosser, Executive Member for Climate Action and Nature Recovery, said:

“We are pleased to offer grants ranging from £10,000 to £20,000 to help businesses achieve their sustainability goals. This is a fantastic opportunity for local businesses to invest in initiatives that will cut their energy use, reduce costs, and deliver lasting environmental benefits, such as making buildings more energy efficient or installing renewable energy systems like solar panels.

“By helping businesses make these improvements, we’re not only supporting them to become more sustainable and adaptive to climate challenges, but also contributing towards the district's broader sustainability and net-zero ambitions.”

Councillor Duncan Enright, Executive Member for Economic Development said:

“The fund is not only about environmental benefits, but also about helping local businesses to thrive in an increasingly competitive market. Investing in sustainability can significantly reduce operational costs in the long term and improve business resilience.

“We are proud to be supporting our local economy by giving businesses the tools they need to grow whilst contributing to a greener future.”

The Climate Action Fund is open to small and medium-sized businesses across West Oxfordshire, including those from the farming and agricultural sectors. Eligible projects must focus on capital improvements that promote sustainability. Examples include:

  • Retrofitting buildings for improved energy efficiency, such as insulation, low-carbon heating, and smart energy controls.
  • Installing renewable energy systems, including solar panels and battery storage.
  • Supporting the transition to electric vehicles through the installation of EV chargers.
  • Purchasing equipment to enhance waste reduction and recycling efforts.
  • Implementing green infrastructure like living walls, green roofs, or water conservation systems.

Applications for the scheme are now open, and businesses are encouraged to submit their proposals by Monday 4 November 2024, with all successful projects to be completed by 28 February 2025. Please note that due to the anticipated high demand, not all eligible applications may be funded.
