Borrow a litter picker and help tidy West Oxfordshire this spring
West Oxfordshire District Council is proud to support this year’s Great British Spring Clean and is encouraging residents, community groups, and parish and town councils to get involved.
The national campaign, organised by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy, is the UK’s biggest mass action environmental event. Each year, more than 400,000 volunteers take part, collecting litter from streets, parks and beaches. Since 2016, millions of ‘Litter Heroes’ have pledged to pick up more than 4.5 million bags of litter.
To support local efforts, the Council is offering litter picking equipment to those who want to tidy up their area. Community groups, parish councils and individual volunteers can request litter grabbers and sacks, while stocks last, to support planned clean-up activities.
Equipment can be provided for one-off events or kept for longer by those who regularly volunteer. The Council will also arrange the collection of any waste gathered during organised litter picks.
Councillor Lidia Arciszewska, Executive Member for Environment, said: “We’re delighted to support the Great British Spring Clean again this year and encourage residents to get involved.
“Litter picking is a simple but powerful way for people to make a visible difference in their community. By making equipment available and allowing volunteers to keep it for longer if needed, we hope to support the fantastic ‘litter heroes’ across West Oxfordshire who help keep our district clean and beautiful.
“The Great British Spring Clean is also an opportunity to remind everyone to take responsibility for our shared spaces by not littering. Littering harms the environment and detracts from the natural beauty of our district, which we all have a role in protecting.”
Keep Britain Tidy estimates that around £30 per household is spent each year clearing litter across the UK.
West Oxfordshire residents and groups can register for equipment via the Council’s website.
You can also pledge your support for the national campaign and Keep Britain Tidy.
Once registered, our team will arrange delivery of your equipment. You may also wish to check with your local town or parish council to see if there are any organised litter picking events taking place near you.
